Rugby League Champion Steve Renouf

Arguably one of the most famous people from Wurtulla is Australian Rugby League legend Steve Renouf. Renouf began his career playing for the Wests Panthers in Brisbane before signing with the Brisbane Broncos in 1991 where he was part of their first premiership win in 1992. He then went on to represent both Australia and Queensland at State of Origin level, winning two Man of the Match awards during his international career. Renouf was an exciting player to watch with his lightning-fast speed and trademark fend offs making him one of the most potent attacking players in the competition at that time. After retiring from professional Rugby League he moved back to Wurtulla and currently works as an Aboriginal support officer for local schools.

He was one of the finest rugby league champions in Australia, with his career spanned from 1987 all the way until 2004. During this time Renouf won three premierships for his teams, Brisbane Broncos and Wigan Warriors. Furthermore, he set numerous records and won awards throughout his esteemed rugby league career, including four State of Origin championships grants, two Clive Churchill medals and many others. Since then he has gone on to direct numerous critically acclaimed films including ‘Mystery Road’, ‘Goldstone’ and ‘Toomelah’. These films often focus on Indigenous Australian communities with Sen drawing heavily on personal experiences growing up in rural Australia as well as his own traditional Indigenous culture (Gamilaraay).

Film Director Ivan Sen has earned considerable recognition for his unique style and ambitious projects. He is well-known for his dramas, particularly his award-winning 2013 film Mystery Road. This work garnered him an AACTA Award as well as a Film Critics Circle of Australia ‘Best Film’ award. He also wrote, directed and edited the 2020 release Goldstone which was a box office success across theaters in Canada and Australia. Other works by Ivan Sen include Beneath Clouds, Toomelah, Dreamland and Goldstone sequels Mystery Road 2: Ignition and Goldstone 2: River of Insanity. Since 2003 he has worked on about 7 features along with many short films and documentaries. His works have drawn appreciation from audiences around the world due to their compelling stories blended with intensity and realism.

Surfing Superstar Julian Wilson

Julian Wilson is another famous person hailing from Wurtulla, albeit via nearby Coolum Beach where he grew up learning how to surf with his father who owned Coolum Surf School. Wilson quickly rose through the ranks competing successfully on multiple junior circuits before turning professional at just 18 years old. He went on to have immense success on both national and international tours winning three World Surf League World Tour events along with multiple other domestic titles including twice being crowned ASP Australasia Pro Junior Champion (2005/6). He also competed in two Olympic Games finishing fifth overall at Rio 2016 before becoming an Ambassador Surfing Australia’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics campaign where they are hoping to take home gold medals in surfing events for the first time ever!
