Molly Meldrum

Molly Meldrum

Molly Meldrum is one of Maroochydore’s most famous personalities. Born Ian Alexander Meldrum in 1949, he is an Australian music critic, journalist, record producer, entertainer and television presenter. Molly Meldrum is a household name, known for his ongoing music journalism and presenting career. Molly’s career took flight in the late 60s on Australia radio network radio 3XY where Molly appeared as a disc jockey and then moved to Countdown in 1974 which Molly produced and presented until 1987. Molly has also been involved in various other forms of music media such as appearing as an honorary President of the ARIA awards since 1989. Molly remained true to his love of live music since leaving Countdown, acting as a broadcaster to promote Australian acts at major festivals and events domestically and internationally, spanning over 4 decades. Molly is credited with helping shape the sound of seventies and eighties music in Australia by introducing audiences nationally via Countdown. Molly was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1988 and is widely considered to be one of Australia’s most influential music figures.

Ian Thorpe

Born in Sydney but raised in Maroochydore, QLD Ian Thorpe is an Australian swimmer who was one of the world’s leading swimmers during his career which spanned more than a decade (1998–2012). He holds four Olympic gold medals as well as a number of Commonwealth Games gold medals, including 10 medals altogether at both events combined. He also holds nine World Championship gold medals; making him one of only four swimmers ever to have achieved this feat. Thorpe has since retired from professional swimming and now works as a television presenter as well as promoting various charitable causes around the world.

Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue is an internationally renowned singer, songwriter and actress whose career has spanned more than three decades and she has sold over 80 million records worldwide throughout her career. She was born in Melbourne but spent much of her childhood growing up in Maroochydore before moving back to Melbourne again when she was 18 years old where her career took off with roles on renowned soap operas such as Neighbours and Home & Away. Her singing career began with her debut album ‘Kylie’ which was released in 1988 to critical acclaim – going on to sell over 6 million copies worldwide – propelling Kylie onto the international stage where she remains today.

Kylie Minogue is a musician and actress who rose to worldwide prominence in the late 1980s as a recording artist. She has since released thirteen studio albums, three compilations, two live albums, and sixty-three singles. Kylie Minogue was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2011 and was recognized with a Doctor of Health Science (honoris causa) degree at Anglia Ruskin University for her work in raising awareness for breast cancer in 2008. Kylie’s music career continues to be successful to this day, with her album Kylie Christmas being certified platinum for sales exceeding 70,000 units in Australia. Kylie Minogue is one of the most successful female music artists of all time.

Jessica Watson

Jessica Watson was born in Buderim near Maroochydore in 1993 before eventually settling down into life living with her family near Mooloolaba Beach close by. At just 16 years old Jessica decided to embark on an ambitious journey – sailing alone around the world unassisted! She set sail from Mooloolaba Marina on October 18th 2009 – seven months later she had completed her incredible journey – being greeted by thousands upon arrival back at Mooloolaba Marina where she started her journey from! Jessica wrote about this incredible adventure in her book ‘True Spirit: The Story Of A 16-Year Old Australian Who Sailed Solo Nonstop Around The World’ – inspiring countless people across the globe with her courage and determination!
